When using products from the store, you never really know what might be lurking under the label. With do it yourself hair masks, you can use the most natural ingredients, and all from your kitchen, for a hair care treatment you can feel good about.

Hair masks are usually made of a few key ingredients. These main ingredients are the main course for your strands because they are packed with nutrients and protein.  The most commonly used items are super moisturizers:
  • Eggs
  • Yogurt
  • Honey 
  • Avocado 
  • Olive oil 
These powerhouses offer superior moisture and help fight dryness and frizz. They work as a base to help create a mixture consistency easy to work into hair. As long as you have one of these in your DIY mask, you can combine nearly any other element to make something more personalized. Some other key ingredients used in homemade concoctions for hair are bananas, apple cider, strawberries, milk, and lemon. These add extra vitamins and proteins to keep hair beautiful.

When making a do it yourself hair mask, the main goal is usually to moisturize and offer hair a booster. As long as you use one of the bases mentioned, you will have the moisture aspect covered. After that feel free to experiment until you find the recipe that gives you the best results. Everyone’s hair is different and needs different things. Maybe your hair needs vitamins found in milk while your curlfriend needs a potassium boost from bananas.

As with any mask, whether store bought or homemade, make sure your hair feels soft and non-greasy once you wash and dry it. No one wants hair they can’t touch! If it is still greasy, you may be using a mask that has too much oil as a base. Try using less or adding lemon to help cut some of the oiliness.

Now that Winter and its harsh winds is here, it’s so important to either develop or maintain a healthy moisturizing routine for your hair by reassessing your techniques. One of the most important components of a natural hair regimen is regular deep conditioning. In the fall/winter months, utilizing deep conditioners that are moisturizing for the hair will prove to be of unique importance, as the conditions of the season cause the hair to be drier and therefore frizzier if not properly cared for.

There are some excellent deep conditioners on the market, but sometimes a good ‘ol homemade deep conditioner does your strands some good! Plus it’s nice to utilize what’s already at your fingertips.

When applying a deep conditioner, always start on hair that has already been freshly washed and conditioned. Apply your deep conditioner from roots to tips, utilizing a smoothing motion to ensure thorough application. When finished, put on a shower cap and either sit underneath the dryer or a heating cap for 15-30 minutes. (Heat allows the mixture to penetrate the hair shaft and will yield much more favorable results than hair that is left exposed.) It is advised not to leave a deep conditioner on longer than an hour, as this often results in hair that is overly moisturized and ultimately more fragile than strong. Lastly, rinse with cool water to close the hair’s cuticle.

For any recipe, you will need one or more of each of the following products: switch it up and see what your hair likes the most!

BASE:
You can use virtually any conditioner as a base but note that the creamier, the better! Often, naturals choose to use mayonnaise because it has an oil base and yields beautiful shine.

LIQUIDS: Moisturize the hair
Aloe Vera Juice: Not only does aloe vera moisturize and help your hair grow, but it also delivers amazing shine by locking oil into the hair shaft.

Glycerin: This ingredient moisturizes by binding water together and works well with other ingredients to heighten your hair’s moisture level.

Water: Well, we couldn’t leave this staple off the list!

OILS: Lock moisture into the hair

Argan Oil: This “liquid gold” makes your hair softer, silkier, and shinier.
Avocado Oil: Perfect for rescuing dry, damaged hair, or remedying an itchy scalp.
Coconut Oil: This oil is great for locking in moisture because it is not easily broken down or evaporated; plus it keeps your hair strong and soft and aids in preventing hair loss.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Who doesn’t love this staple? It locks in moisture and heals dry and itchy scalp, resulting in shiny, beautiful hair.
Jojoba Oil: This oil is similar to the oil that your own scalp produces (sebum), and therefore is well absorbed by your strands.

SEALANTS: Close the hair shaft to keep the oil and moisture inside

Shea Butter: This is probably the most used sealant of all and for good reason: it protects the hair against harsh weather and heat, softens the hair, and soothes an irritated scalp.

I often get asked about whether there are any natural hair softener options for natural hair and if henna is a good choice. Although henna may soften some curls, it can be hit or miss and seems largely dependent on the thickness of the hair strand and the existing curl formation. Henna tends to loosen the curls of those who don’t want loosening! It’s also a time-consuming process and essentially permanent, so it’s not for the faint of heart! *lol* Finally, if not done right, henna can cause damage and so I always suggest that anyone interested in trying it do their research before making the leap (I read everything I could on henna for 2 months before finally deciding to try it).

That being said, when I was in the CurlyNikki Presents Kim Coles’ Grow Out Challenge (whew … that never gets easier to write!), I read a rave review about a natural hair softener. The young lady called it a caramel treatment. This treatment was generally made with molasses (which gives it the caramel color and consistency – hence the “caramel” moniker), honey, banana baby food and oils, but there are variations on the recipe that can be found online.

Now, the old GOC blogs are very hard to find. So, I wasn’t able to find the GOC blog or post about the treatment yet. But I did find this good article on Black Hair Information: The Caramel Treatment- A Natural Hair Softener.

As I wasn’t interested in hair softening, I never tried it. But, I did “lock it in the vaults” as I knew it was good information and might be helpful to someone. And, since I recently got asked about natural curl softeners, I figured the time to open the vaults was now .

That being said, here is a video demonstrating how to make the treatment that might be helpful to those of you interested in trying the treatment.



Ingredients:
  • 1/3 cup of olive oil 
  • 1/3 cup of raw honey 
  • 1/4 cup of molasses 
  • 2 containers of banana baby food 
  • 1 tbs of cornstarch dissolved in water 
  • splash of apple cider vinegar 
Directions:
  • Mix all ingredients together cold in a small pot 
  • Add the cornstarch water mix into the pot while its still cold 
  • Mix well, make sure all the clumps are out 
  • Turn on stove to medium low heat and keep mixing 
  • Once mix begins to boil, turn off the heat 
  • Once cooled, apply mixture generously to your hair
  • Let the treatment sit on your hair for 1 hour, then shampoo off
  • Use this treatment once every two weeks for maximum softness and definition   

Now, it wouldn’t be right for me to share this and not tell you about an article that I found by WestNDNBeauty on Confessions of a Blog Vixen that said that it was a waste of perfectly good banana baby food!  So, guess it doesn’t work for everyone. But, given that the ingredients are pretty easy to find and inexpensive, I figured that some might want to give it a try to come to their own conclusion!!

It sure does not hurt to mix up your own hair treats once in a while. In fact, many well established brands began right at home by mixing up ingredients that proved to produce great results. These three DIY recipes are easy to make and are budget-saving.

DIY Moisturizing Conditioner
This conditioning mix is great for naturals who suffer from dryness, because it is loaded with natural emollients and moisturizers. Honey and glycerin are humectants while Greek yogurt and olive oil contribute to locking in the moisture in your strands.
Combine all ingredients in a bowl with a hand or stand mixer. Whip for 3-5 min., ensuring that all ingredients are well mixed. Transfer your mixture to a mason jar or any other recycled bottle of your choice. After shampooing your hair, apply your conditioner to the length of your hair. Begin at your ends as these as the most delicate and prone to damage. Allow the conditioner to sit on your hair for 20 minutes covered with a plastic cap. Your body heat will aid in the further absorption of the product, leaving your hair fully hydrated. Rinse off thoroughly and continue with your regimen.

DIY All-Natural Detangler

This recipe here has been a lifesaver for me. It melts away my knots and tangles. The secrets to its effectiveness are the emollients. Each ingredient adds lubricating properties to this mix.
  • 4 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp. avocado oil
  • 2 Tbsp. glycerin
  • ½ Tbsp. coconut cream
Mix your ingredients in a bowl. Make sure that they are fully mixed for an even consistency. Apply to the length of your hair, saturating your strands from root to ends. Wear your plastic cap and leave the mixture on for 25-30 min. This allows the concoction to settle into your strands. The high moisture content will soften your strands and make them supple.

DIY Moisturizing Leave-In Spritz

Many naturalistas commit to spritzing their hair at least once a day, in order to give their strands an extra moisture boost. I’ve found this particular recipe as effective as a leave-in mix.
  • ¼ cup-water
  • 2 Tbsp. aloe vera juice
  • 1 Tsp. glycerin
  • 1 Tsp. olive oil
Pour the ingredients into your spritz bottle. This mix is great for when your hair is feeling dry or crunchy. Whether you are outside playing a sport or simply running errands in hot weather, this spritz will give your hair added moisture.
