Do you know how you ALWAYS wish you had listened to what your mama told you when you were young? “Don’t wear foundation too young,” she said. “Don’t rub your eyes, you’ll get wrinkles." “Wash your hands every time you come from outside.” (I know you don’t do it EVERYtime either, don’t judge me!)

Well, I️ may not have listened to Mama every time, but I️ sure do employ her wisdom now. Like any Indian mother, my mom was always in the kitchen and would come out with some gnarly looking stuff on her face. None of that, “pretty green monster “ stuff. I’m talking real (sometimes smelly) goop.

Now before y’all start booing and ewwing, hear me out, one of the key ingredients that I️ don’t see promoted in western media is one of my holy grail kitchen to skin products; licorice root. #Canigetahollaforadollahoney!

Not only is this ingredient easy to find in any South Asian grocery store under the name of “Mulethi” it’s also fairly inexpensive and is essentially magic. I’m not kidding.

Licorice powder
Licorice root and Amla powder were the two key ingredients in the face mask my mother applied twice a week for most of my life. She has impeccable skin and I️ truly hope one day I️ too can say, I️ get it from my mama.

Licorice root has INCREDIBLE benefits, it contains brightening properties that assist in fading scars and blemishes as well as medicinal uses for health conditions like asthma. Get the lowdown on all the licorice benefits here.

Amla powder
Amla or Indian Gooseberry is rich in antioxidants and can help lower cholesterol, and has major hair benefits. Check out a CurlyNikki piece on Amla here.

How to make the Goop:

2 teaspoons licorice root powder

1 teaspoon Amla powder

Pinch of turmeric

Squeeze of raw honey

Add water according to consistency.

Now before you go mixing ingredients trying to make your facial brew, understand that licorice root powder doesn’t thicken as much in liquid where as Amla does, try to find a happy medium. You’re looking for the consistency to resemble a thin paste.

Step 1. Remove your makeup and cleanse your skin prior to applying. Pro Indian Mom tip: use an oil to remove makeup (my fave is jojoba) and then milk or a steaming hot towel to get the gunk off your face sans chemicals and face wash!

Step 2. Apply the goop. Take disturbing Snapchat selfies, scare your children and spouse, clean up your mess and THENNNNN use warm water to soften the mask and begin exfoliating your skin with its remnants in circular motions as you rinse it off.

Step 3. Admire your soft as a baby’s bottom and brighter than sunshine skin.

Step 3. Take #NaturallyGlam selfies

Step 4. Tone with rose water and witch hazel and moisturize with Rosehip seed oil!

Mama is 53 and #SLAYING thanks to licorice root!

Let me know what you think of this monster mask or share your mama’s favorite skincare tips and tricks!

Let's face it, not all of us have time to put on a full face of makeup on a daily basis. However, this doesn't mean that you can't still look good. I'm certain you've seen many Instagram models looking awesome even with "no makeup" on. Well, the truth is, even though they don't have their usual makeup on, they still do something to give their face a glow. You can do it too. It only takes seven minutes or less and it doesn't require foundation. Let's get right to it!

Continue

Cleanse
The first thing you need to do is clean your face. Just apply your favorite face wash and work it on your face and neck in a circular motion. Rinse it out with lukewarm water and pat your face dry. This will take one or two minutes.
MAC Strobe Cream
Moisturize
Now that your face is clean, the next step is to moisturize your face and neck area. If you want an extra glow, mix a pea sized amount of Mac strobe cream with the moisturizer and apply it together. This will brighten up your skin and brighten it. This will take one minute or less.

Do Your Brows (optional)
This is an optional step. It depends on how fast you are in doing your eyebrows. You can fill them in a little or just brush and set them using a brow gel or just leave them like that. It's up to you. This should take 3 minutes. If you choose to skip this step, then it's 0 minutes.
10 highlighters for dark skin

Highlight
This is the fun part. Apply a highlighter that complements your skin tone. You can use a powder one but the cream and gel ones work best in this case. You can use your fingers to apply the highlighter on the areas that light hits your face. This includes the chin, bridge of the nose, temples, high points of your cheeks and any other place you normally apply your highlighter. This will take two minutes.

Lip Balm
Don't forget to take care of your lips. Apply a lip balm, a nude lipstick or even a little Vaseline. Do whatever works for you. This will take less than a minute.

Set Your Face
The last thing to do is use a setting spray to set your face. Although there isn't much makeup used, the setting spray will make your face look bright and glowy. This will take less than a minute too.
There you have it! A seven minute no foundation routine that will give you an amazing glow and make you look put together. It's worth a try and it might end up being your go-to routine when you're in a hurry.

What's your go-to makeup routine when you're in a hurry?

If you follow me on social, you may have seen that I recently headed to London for a lovely breakfast with one of my favourite skincare brands Aveeno®. The event was hosted at the super cute 26 Grains on Neal's Yard - a part of London I've never visited before but one well worth checking out as it's super pretty with colourful buildings on every corner. We were greeted by the lovely Aveeno® team and Alex Hely Hutchinson, founder of 26 Grains. Alex created two healthy but delicious recipes to go alongside Aveeno's new products with the main ingredient being oats, as 26 Grains is famous for their range of oat/grain based dishes. Oats are also an ingredient in Aveeno’s skincare due to their many benefits for the skin including soothing sensitivity, restoring moisture, cleansing and protecting. With this being said, it makes perfect sense for Alex to partner with Aveeno® on this launch.

You may have read a post I wrote in collaboration with Aveeno® last year called ‘Inside & oat’(read it here if you missed it) which was all about the belief that healthy, beautiful skin is a reflection of your overall health and wellbeing and a big part of that is what we put inside our body, as well as the products we put on it. After all, great skin starts from the inside and what you eat plays a huge part in that. I know that if I eat too many pizzas or drink too much wine, my skin starts to pay for it. However, with a combination of healthy eating and Aveeno's daily skincare products that contain natural and skin beneficial ingredients, you can nourish your skin from the inside and out and be well on your way to a beautiful glowing complexion.

With this being said, we were offered a choice of two breakfasts to enjoy at the event - both of which were healthy yet delicious, showing there's no excuse to not eat foods that are good for our general wellbeing and of course, our skin! There was a yoghurt, oat, honey and apricot cake or oats with pepper, parmesan and olive oil to choose from and they were both fabulous. I usually go for savoury over sweet but the cake was too beautiful to ignore. As you can see from the photos, it looked amazing and it tasted even better. I can't believe it was healthy - I definitely need to recreate this at home.

As I mentioned, the event was to launch some new additions to the Aveeno® range and oh my gosh, they have to be my favourite yet. I'm a big fan of all the products and have never tried one I haven't liked but these are definitely my favourite so far. Aveeno® is all about creating products with ingredients that are proven to be beneficial for the skin and this new range is based around yogurt concentrate - an ingredient known to keep the skin nourished and hydrated and one that is perfect paired with oats - makes sense to mix them together right? I wasn’t aware of the benefits of yogurt in skincare before attending the event but Dr Shefali Rajopat, a consultant dermatologist, says “Yogurt contains a rich mix of powerful nutrients such as vitamin B12 and riboflavin, protein, calcium and Vitamin D.” Interesting, right?

I was kindly gifted some of the products to take home with me and I’ve been using them ever since. I’ve been trying the new Aveeno® Daily Moisturising Body Yogurt, Yogurt Body Wash and the Aveeno® Daily Moisturising After-Shower Mist and as I said, I’m in love. The yogurt-like texture of the products is perfect - it’s thick and creamy but also really light at the same time and sinks into the skin almost immediately. What I find with Aveeno® is that the products do exactly what they say on the bottle - they’re simple and straight to the point, and I like that. I’m not one for an overly complicated skincare routine and I know I can rely on these products to do exactly what you’d expect from them - moisturise my skin, leave it feeling soft and supple and provide a radiant healthy glow. I’ve been especially impressed by their new after-shower mist as I find this so easy to use after showering and it’s given me the push I need to moisturise my full body more regularly.

As well as having the same amazing ingredients as Aveeno’s other ranges and the addition of yogurt concentrate, these new products also have divine new scents - Apricot & Honey and Vanilla & Oats. I’m a big fan of sweet scents so both of these are right up my street and seriously, they smell good enough to eat. Thank goodness I had the cake to keep me going at the event or I might have been half tempted to dive right into them, haha. I also think they’re the perfect scents for Summer as they’re sweet but also really fresh and uplifting - perfect for an early morning boost.

I’m such a big fan of these new Aveeno® products and I know they’re going to be a staple in my daily routine for the foreseeable future. Are you a fan of Aveeno®? Do you like the sound of these new products? For more information visit aveeno.co.uk
